Well, Vanessa Bee and her husband, Philip, are home now in Devon after the latest round of courses here in Ireland. My house seems very quiet without all the chatter, laughter, halters and muddy boots.
Vanessa's teaching just gets better and better. I had a fantastic weekend and made some real progress with my complicated chestnut Arab mare, Lolli. The best moment of the weekend was joining up with her at liberty. And after spending hours and hours and hours in the last month trying to catch her in the field, this morning she walked up to me and was haltered without the aid of an apple. This is a HUGE thing for her and unless you've been in the same situation you cannot know how frustrating and demoralising it is not to be able to catch your adored horse. We've certainly found a way forward and look forward to the journey.
The ridden course was less successful for us as Lolli got a little excited in the group and I had to take her back to basics - well Rome wasn't built in a day. But I did get such a kick out of watching everyone else on the ridden course. There was some fabulous stuff going on and some amazing changes in the visiting horses.
We have revised our courses slightly for June/July to take account of what we are being asked for. We already have bookings so if you would like to come along on any of the courses, please let me know as soon as you can.
Thursday, 28th & Friday, 29th June
Basic Skills to Positive Horsemanship 3
For the first time this will be run as a two-day course to give more time to review the existing skills to give a strong foundation for progression to the level 3 advanced work. The first day will be groundwork. The morning will be refreshing and refining the existing cues and the afternoon learning more sophisticated movements and concepts. The second day will have the
same format but will relate to ridden work.
Saturday, 30th June & Sunday, 1st July
Basic Skills to Positive Horsemanship 1
This is where you start! This 2-day course focuses on interacting with the horse on the ground. You will learn the messages that you give to your horse using your body language and how to interact in a positive way. Many people who have been on previous courses have said that this course has been great for building confidence and strengthening the relationship with their
horses. There is no ridden work on this course.
Monday, 2nd & Tuesday, 3rd July
Using a Round Pen Constructively
We are running this course for the second time and I really enjoyed it last year. You will learn how to work with your horse at liberty and how to use your body language. We will also look at long-reining and lunging and cover the types of 'round' pen, be they square or round, how to build them and explore the reasons behind using them.
Trainers in Ireland
Some of you may be aware that a few of us, including myself, have been accepted on to the Positive Horsemanship Trainer programme. We are developing our skills, with Vanessa's help, so that we can help individuals on a one-to-one basis who may be having specific problems. On the 2nd and 3rd June, myself and another student, Emma Jane, will be in Devon for assessment for 'Probationary Trainer' status. If anyone would like some help from a trainer, please get in touch with me and I will point you in the direction of someone.
I hope that you find one or more of these courses to be of interest. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to attend. I will then forward booking information.
be well
