Foreq yield in the saddle:
Using the one step at a time principal (TM)
Do all the ground work first above.
Then (version 1) (assumes your horse bacn backup from light rein/seat cue)
1. Sit in the saddle at a halt.
2. Ask your horse for a VERy small step backwards
3. Once your horse starts to 'think' about shifting his weight onto his two back legs in preparation for taking a step backwards (but hasn't actually taken a step backwards etc!)..........
4. Look right, move your body right, hold out your right hand and that rein as if you want your horses front leg (or legs) to take one step right.
5. Your horse should move one of his front legs right, without the back feet moving at all.
DONE (you can do the same going left) - first ask for backup, then *just* before your horse starts to move back, open a hand out sideways and look sideways and your horse should take a front step sideways.
(version 2)
1. Get up into the saddle on the far side (its good for you!)
2. Stand still (always good for your horse)
3. Turn your whole body the same way you want your horses front end to go. (lets say right)
4. Stretch out your right hand to open a window to the right and space for your hrose to move into.
5. Stretch your left hand up the neck and point to the horses ear which is nearest to the way you will be doing. (all this is quite 'obvious' but thats ok beacse 1. you are training and 2. lets give yoru horses as much help at the start and make everything very obvious, clear and and simple so he can figure it out easily)
6. Slide your left toe forwards and tap that left shoulder, like the way your hand did it when you were on the ground. VERY lightly. Watch your horses think and give him time to figure it out.
7. Whan you get one step of sideways from the front end, stop everything, rubs praise, hugs, celebrations, etc.
Anyone any other ways to teach this?
