So its time to introduce Mia to the bit. I've been doing a lot of homework on what bit would work best for her and i've decided that a french link eggbutt snaffle would most likely be the best option, as there'll be no pinching from loose rings and no nutcracker effect from the join of a regular snaffle with the french link. Does anybody use, or used in the past, this bit? Is it as kind to their mouths as i think and hope it will be? she's a very mouthy horse, everything gets a chew from her so i don't think it'll be a problem introducing the bit, and i'm actually really looking forward to it!! here's a link to some of my more recent snapshots of the young lady, she's looking fantastic now after her 2 weeks of stable rest (she got a god awful absess and the local vet is a disaster, yada yada yada, found amazing vet-Philip MacManus-and he saved the day and her hoof!). But we used the time for bonding and working on things like her rug issue, and she's got it nailed now after a LOT of work! www.flickr.com/photos/bobbicotter/sets/72157603179119315/oh and Happy New Year everyone!

BEAUTIFUL pics, she is a stunner I actually just bought a rocking S french link bit (there's a post about it here somewhere) which is a french link style (so no nut cracker) but is supposed to be nicer to corner of mouths due to its construction.... I didnt get it specially for anything (might use it on Oz tho when I come to bit him), but more as its got rave reviews as being a kind bit that even horses who don't like other bits, seem to not mind too much about, so it'll be put into the boot of my car until I meet the right horse to try it out on

yea, i saw the s french link bit, looks good, got great reviews anyway! I bought the french link eggbutt on saturday and i'm really happy with it so far. I showed it to Mia that evening and she took it straight in her mouth to have a quick chew. she then let me insert it properly (with my holding to 2 rings, not attached to her bridle) and she accepted it no problem. I left it in her stable tied to the railing so she could play with it and get familiar with the taste and feel of the bit. I hope to do a 10 minute test run with the bit and bridle this evening while i'm cleaning up around the yard and see how she gets on, i don't thnk she'll have any problems though.
We had her out in the arena for the first time since she got lame yesterday, she wasn't as cooperative as she has been, she's just out of practice i guess, but her hoof seems perfectly sound again, thank goodness! She saw herself in the mirrors in the arena for the first time yesterday (they've been covered up until a week or so ago) and she didn't know what to make of it! She started neighing at herself then looking behind the mirror to see where the other horse was. Very funny! Poor girl didn't know what to make of it all, made us laugh though!! Might have to video her next time!

Mia had her first 5 minutes with her bridle and bit on lastnight, and it went quite well. She took the bit without any problems at all and stood patiently as we adjusted all the bridle fixings. We let her walk around with it on and do her own thing. She chewed at it a lot but i was expecting that, and thankfully didn't seem really bothered by this new metal thing in her mouth!
