Wasn´t there, instead needed some sunshine and was down at the Spanish Riding School in Jerez near Seville watching a training session and thinking, yep in a few years Oz and I could be doing that!!! Met two Preswakski horses too (dodgey spelling there!) How was the Parelli conference?

It was very much of a "Show" there was lots to see. I personally found that there was too much emphasis on the merchandise as people saw Pat , Linda and all of the other people who were displaying what they have learned, they purchased a lot of the merchandise eg carrot sticks. I feel that a lot of people felt i can do that go buy a carrot stick and start hammering away on thier horses without actually knowing what they are looking for.
Ok so there was a time limit on the weekend and they had to stick to a schedule but a little bit more time could have been spent explaining to people about what signs to look for in their horse when they are working with ther carrot stick. For example getting the horse to move away from pressure, i personally would start with my own body language before introducing a carrot stick. Its like the saying "dont run before you can walk" I feel some people (not all of course) will go in with this carrot stick keep persisting looking for the bigger things when in fact they may have missed all of the smaller answers the horses have given. I found there was great emphasis on the "bigger" picture , piaffe passage, counter canter flying changes etc but all of the hours of ground work that is needed to get a horse to this stage was ignored. Little emphasis was placed on simple exercises that normal everyday people could do with their horses. I feel some people may go off try this look for the bigger stuff not get the right answers fail and say this natural horsemanship way of going is a load of bull. Becaure they missed all of the smaller stuff.
Also there was many thing s i saw over the weekend which i understood why the handler was doing what he was doing but none of this was explained to the crowd.
I do not condemn anything i saw over the weekend but i gather this was only a taste so if you want to learn real Pareli go on one of the courses. I will take the bits i want to take and leave the bits which do not suit!!

Well, its sounds interesting anyway! It guess it was more of a 'ta-da' type demo rather than a teaching the basics weekend, maybe just to get people initially interested. I'm all for the basics though ;D No one has all the answers so its always a great idea to just use what suits you and your horse best, regardless of where you learnt it. Your horse is your best teacher at the end of the day. Have karmaed you for the feedback thanks!

Have you gotton the silversand videos from ebay? 3 VHS tapes, does a lot of the basic ground and riding stuff (Steve did PNH years ago then branched out) and usually under a tenner €10 to buy. Definitely worth a look while you're waiting for PNH
