TODAY'S BIG THOUGHT on REIN CONTACT: One big thing to come from Steve's last clinic this weekend just gone, is that "Straight reins = pressure = pushing." Uncompromising. Not everyone would recognise or acknowledge that, not everyone wants that. Much work was done on true connection and contact with no weight in the rein (no pushing in other words). It is probably controversial to question what many people would call light contact I think. You watch videos, look at photos, and you see the straight rein and your whole perception is changed. The problem is, once you've felt that connection through a soft (i.e. not straight) rein it's like a drug. You can see how the horses respond and feel about it as well, and it's good.
