It can go something like this:
Horse "rider your hands are pulling a constant traction back and putting pressure on my fragile bars - ouch - I'll show you this by opening my mouth"
Rider" evasive horse not excepting the bit, my hands are fine and I shouldn't lift them anyway, I need to pull to get a proper head carriage if you open your mouth I will now strap it shut so I can't see your objection"
Horse " I can't open my mouth to have a conversation so I will put my head in teh air"
Rider " oh you bad evasive horse not excepting my hands pulling the bit on your bars, I'll strap you head down with a martingale or some such"
Horse " oh bugger - now what? put up and shut up? thats depressing, I know, I'll explode insome way or form maybe they'll lay off with teh hands then"
Rider - "that frightened me so much I'll rasie the bit and tie your mouth shut tighter"
Horse " shall I shut down? no I'm too intelligent for that, I'll do VERY angry and throw everything I have got into getting this message accross"
Rider " DANGEROUS HORSE I'LL ........" choose your ending.

The flash noseband - a newish invention. It is to prevent the horse opening the mouth or crossing the jaw. Prevent rather than look for the reasons why (and maybe improve the riding). So why do we see so many bridles fitted with the bit so high that it visibly stretches and distorts the horse's mouth, and then that bit is fixed securely in place by a flash that closes the mouth an keeps the bit firmly in that place? Surely logic would suggest that if you stretch such a delicate piece of the horse's body as his lips, and then you keep it in that position, you will numb the mouth and desensitise it?
BUCK BRANNAMAN ON GADGETS:
Gimmicks
Gimmicks are all a bunch of crap. Things like raw reins and running martingales are all used to force the horse to bend. They are used to make one stronger on a resistant horse. Gimmicks are pullies. The problem is they force a horse to bend rather than teach a horse to bend. The problem is when you make this stronger, you need to be twice as fast to release. No one has that timing. There has never been a gimmick invented to make up for sorry horsemanship.
Tiedowns
Horses don't need them. Horses do not need tiedowns to brace into. High goal polo players do not need them. Buck played polo in a snaffle and at the end of the season, one of the top polo players in the world bought every single one of his horses.
“Before I met Ray, I had probably used every gimmick known to man. Now it’s been 35 years since I rode like a caveman.”
Restrictive nosebands: (flashes and grackles).
I hate them. Stupid. You are driving a car, and a light comes on to say you need oil. Do you punch through the glass panel and break the light, or do you buy some more oil? People who used grackles and flashes on their horses are the people who bash through their instrument panel. The problem is inside the horse, not outside.
