Just thought I'd post my experiences with my drinking water in case anyone has noticed similar problems.
I have a very sugar sensitive mare who has recently had a few months on soaked hay to sort her hooves out. This has had good effect on them. Since being here she has always had large soft formed droppings and when fed soaked hay this improved slightly but not much. I have tried lots of gut assist products such as yea sacc and activated charcoal granules over the years with no effect and had concluded this was normal for her.
I began collecting rain water for horses to drink after my mega water bills from soaking and noticed an improvement in her droppings straight away with some hiccups. This mare now has totally normal droppings since I stopped all access to drinking troughs.
The other horses droppings have also changed but they didn't appear to have a problem.
I had no idea that 73% of Irish tap water is fluoridated and it was confirmed yesterday that my supply is. I personally stopped drinking it some months ago after long term bowel upset and this has resolved.
Fluoride is potentially a very nasty chemical and from my experience obviously has the capacity to affect the gut of animals.
To add, so long as it is delivered in the correct amounts I'm pretty sure most people and animals wont have a problem I'm just describing what I have experienced and am pretty sure it's fluoride in my case as opposed to say coliforms.
So just thought if anyone is having unexplained problems with horses guts and droppings it might be worth considering the water.
