I have a young (4yo) Thoroughbred gelding named Rua. I bought him six months after deciding to get back into riding after a break of 2 and a half years. When i went to look at Rua he was in desperate condition. He was literally a bag of bones with no condition whatsoever. but had such an adorable face that when i went home after seeing him i just couldnt stop thinking about him. And i beleive that they all deserve a chance. i was also afraid of what might happen if i didnt buy him.
I have him in a lovely friendly livery yard now which he really likes and has plenty of buddies. in the stable he is the most adorable and friendly horse in the world, but its a different story outside the box. i have been lunging every day before riding to continually work on his top line, and then riding. some days he is so quiet and lazy and just wont move forward, and other days he's the opposite. its either all or nothing with him! when i try ride him anywhere else other than the arena he is a danger. he will even spook at the birdds flying over him in the sky. :-[on roads he is the same, and then he'll quieten down, but if we meet a car i nearly lose him altogether. he will start to back up and try spin around and gallop the other direction.
i fell like i should be getting somewhere with him by now and really dont feel like i am. he's fine travelling and will walk into a horsebox with no problem whatsoever, so its not all bad. however i do want to make some progress with him before somebody gets hurt. can anyone shed any light on what might be the problem with my extremely nervy horse?
