Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find a farrier that does natural barefoot trim in or around Kerry? If none are available, would it be okay to ask a normal shoe farrier to trim my horse hooves in its natural shape? How often should bare hooves be trimed?

Hi ya, we use TJ at our yard and he is fantastic and does a brilliant bare foot trim. The great thing about TJ is that he doesn't try to convince you to go back to shoes. He works with a lot of young horses. He pointed out conformation faults with my mares feet which I had never noticed before and he balances them out each visit for her. He charges €25 each time and we call him out every six weeks and we don't then need to do any trimming ourselves in between which is a real bonus. I know he does a lot of work in Cork (he is a Cork man) so you could give him a call and if he can't do it I am sure he could recommend someone. We got his name from the Master Farriers of Ireland. Have his mobile number in work and will give it to you tomorrow. Hope this helps.

I have Dan Guerrera (www.barehoof.com) coming to run a clinic on the 17th to 19th February near Naas, Co Kildare. It is aimed at teaching horseowners how to trim and maintain their own horses' hooves. Email me if you're interested. lyndacroft@eircom.net

Hi, wondering if you managed to find someone? I'd also recommend Lorie Daly. Shes based in Ennis but does travel. She is excellent, very gentle and takes so much time with them. She really sorted my little donkey out and he loved her! I can give you her details if you are interested. Paula

Personnaly, I would recommend you learn to do the trim yourself. It has two advantages: 1) It''s cheaper than paying someone else. A rasp cost 20 euros and is good for about 20 trims. 2) Since you do it yourself, you do it when it's needed, not when the trimmer is available. This is important, as a regular trimming programme is what keeps your horses feet healthy.
While shoeing is a specialised skill, doing a maintenance trim can be learn over a weekend. It's probably a good idea to get an experienced trimmer to do the first trim for you, to show you how to do the maintenance trim, and to occasionally check your work, but do a bit of reading on the subject, and within a year, you'll be confidentaly flying solo. It's not nearly as hard as you might imagine. Many barefoot trimmers are women, and basically, anyone who is physically able to clean up their horses' hooves could trim them as well.
