Hi,
My name is Monique, a couple of you have met me on the funday in November.
I am originally from The Netherlands, and i've been living in Ireland for the last 5 years. I am married to Richard, who also has an interest in horses.
When i was barely 5, my father bought me a Shetland pony. A little black mare. I was scared of her, because whenever i wanted to collect her from the field, she would come racing to me with her little ears as flat as possible. Of course, being only 5, i would run away and position myself safely behind the gate. I remember my father telling me; just stand still when she comes running, and nothing will happen. Probably thinking to myself; yeah right, standing still while this big black vicious thing is making me pretty clear that she doesn't want me there. Of course at one point i had to do what my father told me. Again, Roza was her name, came running towards me, and there i was standing still in the middle of the field, getting ready to run, but i fell. Roza was looking at me, turned around and ran away herself. From that moment on my fears of collecting my black vicious thing were over. I now knew that if i would just stand still, nothing would happen. She tried again a couple of times, without satisfying result for her, and the attack mode was gone.
I guess you could say this was my first experience with natural horsemanship.
Horses have always been in my life ever since.
Of course, like almost everyone, i started with the English style. I did competitions, mainly dressage. After a while i felt this wasn't the way to go for me anymore, so i started looking for other options. Western style was the answer for me at that point, but still there was this feeling of something missing. Then i found this website...
