I've seen this before!!! Grrr! I suppose it's to 'help' the horse with lift! What about the thump on the horses back each time though!!!! Also thinking about skeletal especially spinal/vertebrae maturity of horses I wonder if the horse is over 7 years? We've also been talking on another forum about 'barring'. The practise of for eg. strapping skinned hedgehogs to horses legs so they will hurt themselves if they hit a fence. Sorry a bit off topic.

Dose any one remember the famous Tommy Wade and his 15.3hh horse Dundrum? he used to do the same thing ( well maybe a little more refined )and he was on many Nations Cup Teams in the 60s & 70s he was also the manager of the S.J.A.I. Team a few years back . So its up to you guys to show the way

Dundrum was named after the town in which he was bought by Eddie Wade sr in the early 60s. It is said that he was a very difficult horse to do much with and as a means of braking his spirit he was used to draw cart loads of stones on the road,it was at this point that Mr E Wade bought him because it was said that he was not very manageable . It was at this juncture that Tommy the son of Eddie started to jump this little bay horse , and in the local circuit was unbeatable , It is believed that his sire was an English thoroughbred called Little Heaven who was brought in to improve the breeding of the connemara but it was thought not to be working so he was castrated after just one season covering.

I watched Dundrum jump in the 60's - he was a smashing wee horse - he'd have won a lot more if his rider had managed to remember the jump off courses. Alan Oliver used to jump like that guy - with a bit more finesse. Lovely horse.
